This marks the first time FIFA directly organizes a regional Southeast Asian tournament, signaling a power shift away from the traditional AFF Cup. For Vietnam, the draw placed coach Kim Sang-sik's team in Group B alongside Thailand, the Philippines, and Pakistan – a group considered unpredictable but promising. Most notably, the format dictates that only the group winner advances to the final, while the runner-up goes to the third-place match. This means the Vietnam-Thailand clash could become an early final, where a single mistake can eliminate a team early. Compared to the AFF Cup's two-legged semi-finals, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is more 'do-or-die', forcing teams to attack from the start. A major advantage for Vietnamese football is that the tournament falls within the FIFA Days window (September 24 – October 5). Under FIFA rules, clubs must release players for national duty. This allows coach Kim Sang-sik to field the strongest squad, including stars playing in Europe and V.League – a rare opportunity for Southeast Asian teams to show full strength, unlike previous AFF Cups where clubs often withheld players.
